People still remember the 1981 raid
On July 16, 1981, more than 90 income tax officers raided the Kanpur premises of Sardar Inder Singh, a well-known businessman, former Punjab Assembly member and Rajya Sabha MP.
They were accompanied by a force of 200 policemen. A huge amount of hidden property and cash was unearthed in the raid that lasted for three nights and two days.
The Income Tax Department also raided the hideouts of Sardar Inder Singh's close associates in Tilak Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and Arya Nagar in Kanpur and the factories of Singh Engineering Works Private Limited located in Panki and Fazalganj. All these were sealed. At that time, Rs 92 lakh in cash was recovered.
Gold, jewellery and fixed deposits were also recovered. The robbery was not limited to Kanpur, its news reached Delhi and here 72 thousand rupees in cash and 1.1 lakh rupees in fixed deposits were recovered. 1.3 crore rupees were recovered and gold bars worth 30 lakh rupees were recovered in two days. Rs 351 crore recovered
Now a raid was conducted by the Income Tax Department in the year 2023. The raid was conducted at the locations of Dheeraj Sahu in Jharkhand and Odisha.
This raid, which started on 6 December 2023, yielded cash worth more than Rs 351 crore and three kg of gold jewellery. This has been the biggest recovery so far.
